In DMC5 though the game acts like Dante and Vergil are destined rivals and defeating Dante is a huge part of Vergil's motivation (it's one of the only things V and Urizen share after all). Sure you could say being defeated by Dante got Vergil obsessed, but it kinda contradicts the respect they had for each other at the end of 3.

Upcoming action title Devil May Cry 5‘s new V Trailer showcases one of the playable characters of Capcom’s game. In the trailer, a smooth-voiced V introduces himself, kills some demons via familiars “Shadow and Griffon”, and seems to have a bit of a fixation with Dante.

Book and cane in hand, this slender man appears covered in impressive tattoos. Before chaos fell upon Red Grave City, he sought out Dante through the information broker Morrison and tasked him to subdue a certain demon. V lacks the power to fight himself, instead relying on three demon familiars to take the offensive in battle.

V is nicknamed “Shakespeare” by his familiars, and can be heard quoting poetry. In The trailer, he uses several famous verses, starting with one from “The Life of William Blake”, from an 1863 two-volume composition of Englishman William Blake. He also quotes “Infant Joy” by the same author

About the Familiars

Shadow

This demon familiar usually takes the form of a quadruped beast, only to shapeshift into blades, needles, and all manner of nasty weapons to act as vanguard. Through Shadow, V can also move at faster speeds than normal.

Griffon

This avian monstrosity can always be found somewhere around V, usually flapping its beak with some inappropriate jab. Griffon brings the thunder with electrified long-range attacks, or can give V a lift if close by.

When summoned, Nightmare may crash onto the battlefield like a meteorite, or burst through parts of the environment to heed the call. Its sluggish movements belie unsurpassable strength and nigh-invulnerability. Wherever Nightmare appears, its massive fists or brutal laser beams are the last thing enemies ever see.
